What Dewey Beach does to a window
Dewey Beach is the saltiest glass on our Rehoboth routes. Oceanfront homes along the numbered streets and the condo buildings on Route 1 take spray straight off the Atlantic on every east wind and dry a white film within days of a cleaning, and a nor'easter carries it clear across town to the bay side, where the homes on Bay Road, the Indian Beach cottages and the bayfront condos take a second dose of brackish haze off Rehoboth Bay. On the sun side it bakes, and once it bakes it starts to etch.
The sand is the second problem. Dewey is flat, narrow and windy, and blowing sand scratches the lower panes and piles in the sliding-door tracks on every windy afternoon. In summer the rental turnover means sliders and balcony glass get handled every week and never see a proper cleaning, and the boat traffic on the bay adds an exhaust film to anything facing the water. In winter Route 1 is brined before every storm, and the spray off passing traffic dries into a white crust on the lower glass of every building along the highway.
Most Dewey Beach homes and condos do best on an every-two-months plan, and oceanfront glass usually wants monthly from October through April when the wind is up. Rental owners have us on a set day between guests, with the inside glass done once a year. We work Dewey year-round on any mild day, and in the off-season the parking is a lot easier.
